  14. This is my first attempt at writing a startrek story intended to go any 
  15. further than the walls of my head. So please bear with me. Advice, comments,
  16. flames (if you must) to be sent to ee93erm@brunel.ac.uk please. I mean that,
  17. I really want some feedback on this thing.

  22. It will probably end up as a crossover but I haven't decided what with yet.

  33. Captain's Log : Stardate 43739.1
  34.  
  35.     We were on our way to Starbase 74 for some well-earned Rest and
  36. Relaxation having successfully completed our assignment in the Bre'el
  37. system, when the Enterprise was pulled off course by a mysterious force.
  38.  All our efforts to determine the origin of this force have been 
  39. unsuccessful. However I have faith in the analytical abilities of Lt.
  40. Commanders Data and LaForge, who are endeavouring to find its point of
  41. origin which may reveal some clue as to its purpose.
  42.  
  43. Picard finished his log entry and turned to Counselor Troi. "Any comments,
  44. Counselor?"
  45.  
  46. "There is a growing impatience amongst the crew, Captain. As you know they
  47. were all looking forward to having a break at Starbase 74. However the 
  48. general attitude is one of resignation to a delay before shoreleave can
  49. commence."
  50.  
  51. "Yes, that is what I expected. We are all used to shoreleave being delayed
  52. due to orders from Starfleet."
  53.  
  54. Picard rose from behind his desk and gestured to the doors of his ready
  55. room. "After you, Counselor."
  56.  
  57.             * * * * *
  58.  
  59. Riker rose from the Captains chair as Troi and Picard re-entered the
  60. bridge. "Nothing so far, Sir" he reported settling into his own seat.
  61. "Geordi called up from Engineering that they may have found a way to 
  62. break free of this...whatever this is...and that he would report in when
  63. Data had finished simulating it in engineering."
  64.  
  65. "Very well, Number One. Let us hope that Commander Data and Mr. LaForge 
  66. have solved this mystery and we can return to Starbase 74."
  67.  
  68. Counselor Troi, who had not yet sat down, then commented "If you will 
  69. excuse me Captain. I have an appointment in a few minutes."
  70. Picard nodded his ascent and Troi left the bridge.

  72. "Well at least someone's keeping busy" commented Riker.

  74.             * * * * *
  75. "The simulation is ready to commence."
  76.  
  77. "Ok, Data. I'll be there in just a minute," called Geordi LaForge from his 
  78. precarious position in a Jeffries tube.
  79.  
  80. As Geordi descended, Data called the bridge and informed them that the 
  81. simulation was about to proceed.

  83. Geordi came over to the station where Data had been entering equations.
  84. "So let's try it, Data. I really hope this works, I want to get to
  85. Starbase 74 as quickly as possible....I have a friend who's arranged
  86. to meet me there."
  87.  
  88. Data started the simulation. It was set up to display events slower than 
  89. they would occur in real-time. If the idea worked the Enterprise would free
  90. herself from the force pulling it along almost instantaneously.
  91. The simulation completed and elated Geordi called the bridge; "It works!"
  92.  
  93. "Well done Commander LaForge, Mr. Data" came the Captains voice. "When can
  94. we be ready to proceed?"
  95.  
  96. "We shall require 24 minutes 16 seconds to implement the necessary changes,
  97. Captain" reported Data.

  100.  
  101. In her office Troi had just finished yet another session with Karla Cornish,
  102. whose son had recently left for Starfleet Academy. Karla missed her son very
  103. much; he was the only surviving member of her familiy since her husband had
  104. died at the hands of renegade Klingons. Karla had basically said that all she
  105. had left now was her archaological work. Troi never enjoyed these sessions
  106. as they reminded her of Ian.

  108. "Counselor Troi, report to the bridge."
  109.  
  110. "On my way Captain." She sighed, what she really wanted to do was go to ten-
  111. forward and have a huge chocolate sundae to cheer herself up. Troi was 
  112. feeling very tired and the situation the Enterprise was now in had already
  113. delayed her shoreleave. Holodecks were alright but they could never compare
  114. to a real shoreleave.

  118. As Troi stepped out of the turbolift she heard Geordi reporting.
  119. "We'll need you to fire all photon torpedoes at maximum spread on my
  120. mark, Captain. Combining that with our backwards pull should give us that
  121. little extra required to break free."
  122.  
  123. "On your mark then, Commander LaForge. Mr. Worf...."
  124.  
  125. "Photon torpedoes are armed, Captain. Laying in maximum spread pattern."
  126.  
  127. Picard turned to Troi, "Ah, Counselor. We felt it would be best to have 
  128. you on the bridge when we attempt to break free. There is a small chance
  129. that you might sense something as we do so, and I felt that it would be 
  130. easier to have you here already."
  131.  
  132. "1 minute to my mark, Captain" came Geordi's voice.
  133.  
  134. "Ready, Mr.Worf?"
  135.  
  136. "Aye, Sir!"
  137.  
  138. "5..4..3..2..1..NOW!"
  139.  
  140. "Firing photon torpedoes!"
  141.  
  142. As the torpedoes were fired the entire ship shook with the strain of trying
  143. to escape. Then the torpedoes detonated and the Enterprise was buffeted by 
  144. shock waves. The science personnel manning the stations at the aft of the
  145. bridge were thrown into the railing dividing the aft and fore bridge.
  146.  
  147. The shaking subsided and the somewhat battered crew returned to their posts.
  148. "Report, Mr. LaForge!"
  149.  
  150. "Scanning now, Sir........I don't understand it. We appear to be still caught
  151. by the force. Proceeding in the same direction as before, Sir!"
  152.  
  153. "What went wrong, Mr. LaForge?"
  154.  
  155. "I don't know, Sir. It should've worked!"
